		<background>
			<p>Melinda Grace, daughter of Samuel and Melinda, was born into money on 12 Dec, 1985.  Her mother's side of the family did well in the paper industry in the early 1900s while her father's side has a long reputation as capable financiers.</p>

			<p>None of this had any impact on Melinda's youth, apart from a seemingly inexhaustible supply of money and favours from those who wished to end up in her parents' goodwill.  As one might imagine, Melinda fell in with a bad crowd.</p>

			<p>As the story often goes, she started with little things which quickly turned into big things.  The highs, both physically- and drug-induced came to a head when she stumbled on a vampire flophouse.  Soon, she too was paying vampires to suck her not-quite-dry.</p>

			<p>There her story would shortly have come to a rather nasty end, were it not for Josh Carpenter, a battle-worn rogue demon hunter who discovered the budding business a month or so after Melinda had.  Once the flames were going nicely, Carpenter took Melinda in for a few days to try to clean her up.</p>

			<p>It wasn't until she'd seen the blackened pile of timbers that Melinda realized where destiny was taking her.  It didn't take long after that to decide that she wanted to look for another path.</p>

			<p>Carpenter introduced her to military life.  Between going back to high school and training first as a cadet and later a member of Spirit, Melinda learned discipline and structure.  You could say it saved her life.</p>
